I actually kinda like the free wheeling nature of 'dark side war crimes guy gets a shot at redemption'. Luke really followed in Master Yoda's footprints in terms of his "boys will be boys" attitude about his Jedi doing a genocide here and there. Anderson was clearly setting him up as the next big character, a new Jedi apprentice with a dark past. Authors mostly didn’t want to do anything with him after his introduction. To be fair (kinda), he largely disappeared after that, until New Jedi Order, where he was older and largely a dick. I don't think I really went through it fully until someone covered it for the "Let's Read" Star Wars thread. The old EU had a really weird relationship with Dark Empire. I don't remember the wording exactly, but Mara Jade brings up the events of Dark Empire, Luke gets all dark and gloomy and says, "The Emperor Reborn." to which Mara, who worked directly for Palpatine, says, "Yeah, I don't think that was actually him, but whatever," and they just move on.

Then Zahn kind of writes it off in the Hand of Thrawn books. But then also one of the Rogue Squadron games (I think it was the N64 one, but it might have been the Gamecube one) had it's final level be the Battle of Mon Cal from one of the Dark Empire comics, with "World Devastators" and V-Wings, and you're like, "What is any of this?" I read the Thrawn trilogy, then read the Jedi Academy trilogy, which starts off with the "rebuilding of Coruscant", and I'm all, "Hang on, what the gently caress happened?" It wasn't quite as easy back then to get a quick recap of anything you missed. General Dog fucked around with this message at 14:52 on Jun 14, 2022

Between that, and the Thrawn trilogy, they really jumpstarted the EU old canon.Īs somebody who only read the novels and didn’t have any knowledge of/access to any comics, the events of Dark Empire confused me because they’re not in any of the books but they’re referenced heavily in the (terrible) Jedi Academy trilogy, and then essentially memory-holed for the remainder of that EU continuity. If Dark Empire could be revamped with I and II combined, with Luke becoming one of Palpatine's apprentices, trying to work from the inside to take them all out (Which Palpatine would encourage, in typical Sith fashion, might makes right), while simultaneously falling to the Dark Side (Be careful at fighting monsters, etc.), until Leia comes and rescues him, and the spirit of Anakin helps them defeat him one last time, I think that would make for a much stronger, coherent, story. For instance, why wasn't the Dark Executors or other Sith Apprentices of Palpatine around in DK1? I never finished Dark Empire II or read III though.ĭark Empire I was a great idea, Dark Empire II was still pretty good but it was a flawed concept from the start as Lucas loved Dark Empire so much he demanded a sequel, and Tom Veitsch was like "Oh, ok, let me figure something out". Neo rasa posted: Generally speaking, Dark Empire owned.
